You take control of your castle, manage it effectively, and then send your troops off to deal with enemy castles or other threats while fending off your own attacks. In the big picture, Stronghold: Warlords is the latest in the Stronghold series, which is billed as a castle simulation and strategy game. Unfortunately, it was very clear from a glance that this was a rather complex rodeo, and it was being performed on animals I did not recognize with functions that were unfamiliar.
This was in the comfort of my own home, however, meaning that there was no such handout there was me, sitting here and doing my best to figure out how it works.įortunately, this is not my first rodeo. The demo that I got to try out was, yes, very much built to be shown off at a demo station, quite possibly with an associated handout to explain how things were supposed to work and what controls to use. Obviously, it’s in a developer’s best interests to try just the same, which is where I wind up with Stronghold: Warlords. That’s not a bad thing, but it means that most of these games rather defy the ability to just drop you down into something in the middle of the game and have you go to town. Water buffalo take longer to load, don’t travel as far downrange as pigs do, but have a larger disease cloud area of effect.It can be really hard to show off a strategy game in any sort of demo form, simply because strategy games are usually lengthy affairs that require elaborate tutorials just to get you up to speed. Pigs are easier and faster to load, will launch further downrange, but have a small disease cloud area of effect. Naturally, the ammunition is best used according to the creature’s size. When launched into enemy strongholds and territory, they will explode into a sickening small or large disease cloud and kill any hapless people caught in the cloud after a few short seconds.
Apparently, there was much discussion, and even official voting polls, had in the Stronghold Discord, which resulted in the in-game addition of diseased animal ammunition making its return to the Stronghold series.ĭiseased animal ammunition includes pigs and water buffalo, and both animals can be dead or mostly dead yet still alive. However, Firefly Studio devs, and particularly the games’ player base on the studio’s Discord, weren’t fully satisfied with just introducing gunpowder to their arsenals. Bombs, cannonballs, and rocket launchers will also be available, providing means for both direct and indirect fire against enemy strongholds and troops on both sides of their walls. For the first time in the studios’ castle-sim series, you’ll be able to deploy “thunder crash bombs, the fearsome mortar, hwacha fire arrow cart and more” onto the battlefields to burn your enemy’s forts and forces to ashes.
